This Place is a monumental art project that explores Israel and the West Bank, as place and metaphor, through the eyes of twelve internationally celebrated photographers. Their photographs question the history, the divisions, and paradoxes of the region and its inhabitants. Marked by the photographers' differing visual vocabularies, nationalities, and cultural backgrounds, the picture that emerges is not a single, monolithic vision, but rather a diverse and fragmented portrait. The images have previously been shown in renowned museums such as DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and the Brooklyn Museum. Now, the project culminates in this retrospective volume, which contains more than 200 spectacular photographs and views of the exhibition, as well as essays by distinguished curators on the project's history and its meaning for today's political and cultural discourse. FEATURING PHOTOGRAPHS BY Frédéric Brenner, Wendy Ewald, Martin Kollar, Josef Koudelka, Jungjin Lee, Stephen Shore, Rosalind Fox Solomon, Thomas Struth, Jeff Wall, Nick Waplington EXHIBITION Jewish Museum Berlin June 7, 2019-January 5, 2020

The Jahrbuch Musik und Gender is a new forum for gender studies in music. With different annual themes in the main section and a section for current reviews and notices, the yearbook seeks to provide historiographical stimuli and to generate discussion on the outcomes and methods of research in gender studies. The Jahrbuch Musik und Gender, founded by Rebecca Grotjahn and Susanne Rode-Breymann is published on behalf of the Research Centre for Music and Gender in Hanover and the subject specialists’ group for women’s and gender studies in the Society for Musical Research. Volume 1 of the yearbook edited by Katharina Hottmann (Hanover) and Christine Siegert (Cologne) investigates the role of music in various forms of cultural representation from the Renaissance to the present day: the court of a Protestant princess in Catholic Ferrara, early modern school performances, rituals of birth and burial, the victory celebrations in Berlin after the Franco-Prussian War, socialist cantatas and a West German Beethoven Festival are examined with regard to the sensory illustration of imaginary orders in national, political, social or religious contexts. The very different spheres of action for men and women are examined as is the construction of gender in musical works and events.

Master's Thesis from the year 2005 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Environmental Policy, grade: 1, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Umwelt-und Ressourcenökonomie), 55 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In October 2003, the executive director of the Philippine non-governmental-organization (NGO) Palawan Conservation Corp, Mrs. Sheila Chan, held a Lecture at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus. The presentation topic was on the events that currently endanger the biodiversity of Palawan. Palawan is an island located at the south-west side of the Philippines, which due its rich environmental resources was declared a biosphere reserve by the United Nations in 1991. As a result of this, tourism is a major source of income. Among the seven menaces pointed out by Mrs. Chan, one particularly attracted my attention: The increasing mining activities on the biosphere reserve, and a specific case of protests against a mining project. The Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation, a firm that have been operating on the island since almost thirty years, became the centre of major controversy. After a contentious past regarding its poor performance with environmental resources, resulting from the presence of negative external effects, as well as legal concerns regarding property rights claims, the company was granted in July 2002 an Environmental Compliance Certificate to expand its mining activities. The legal battle among representatives of the firm and NGOs, which were actively advocating the interests of the native population, was added to the volatility of the southpalawenos that finally resulted in a rally, attracting around 1000 demonstrators of the municipality Bataraza. This social dissatisfaction is not only as a result of the expectations of the native population being let down in the past by the company, especially those of the southpalawenos and some well-informed urban residents, but is also directed towards the environmental bureaucracies, even to the level of the central government. Formal arrangements concerning the management of the assets involved have been apparently violated, thus generating the need for new institutional arrangements.
