Diverse, HIGHLIGHT FILM, 2005, Film, EAN 4011976825180 Behind ..., FSK: 12, Deutsch 150 Min. Quelle/Copyright: Entertainment Media Verlag

The #1 New York Times–bestselling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of ´36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys´ gold medal race. Daniel James Brown´s robust book tells the story of the University of Washington´s 1936 eight-oar crew and their epic quest for an Olympic gold medal, a team that transformed the sport and grabbed the attention of millions of Americans. The sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the boys defeated elite rivals first from eastern and British universities and finally the German crew rowing for Adolf Hitler in the Olympic games in Berlin, 1936. The emotional heart of the story lies with one rower, Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, who rows not for glory, but to regain his shattered self-regard and to find a place he can call home. The crew is assembled by an enigmatic coach and mentored by a visionary, eccentric British boat builder, but it is their trust in each other that makes them a victorious team. They remind the country of what can be done when everyone quite literally pulls together - a perfect melding of commitment, determination, and optimism. Drawing on the boys´ own diaries and journals, their photos and memories of a once-in-a-lifetime shared dream, The Boys in the Boat is an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate story of nine working-class boys from the American west who, in the depths of the Great Depression, showed the world what true grit really meant. It will appeal to readers of Erik Larson, Timothy Egan, James Bradley, and David Halberstam´s The Amateurs. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Edward Herrmann. In 1936, against a backdrop of swastikas flying and storm troopers looming, an African-American son of sharecroppers set three world records and won an unprecedented four gold medals, single-handedly crushing Hitler´s myth of Aryan supremacy. The story of Jesse Owens at the 1936 Olympic Games is that of a high-profile athlete giving a performance that transcends sports. But it is also the intimate and complex tale of the courage of one remarkable man. Drawing on unprecedented access to the Owens family, previously unpublished interviews, and exhaustive archival research, Jeremy Schaap transports us to Nazi Germany to weave this dramatic tale. From the start, American participation in the games was controversial. A boycott, based on reports of Nazi hostility to Jews, was afoot, but it was thwarted by the president of the American Olympic Committee. At the games themselves, the plots and intrigues continued: Owens was befriended by a German rival, broad jumper Luz Long, who helped Owens win the gold medal at his own expense. Two Jewish sprinters were, at the last moment, denied the chance to compete for the United States out of misguided politeness to the Nazi hosts. And a myth was born that Hitler himself had snubbed Owens. Like Neal Bascomb´s The Perfect Mile, Triumph captures this momentous episode in sports - and - world, history in a nuanced yet page-turning narrative full of drama, suspense, and color. 1. The Olympics have long been the center of attention in the sports world, but perhaps no moment in the history of the games was as poignant as Jesse Owens´ performance in Berlin in 1936. Owens would finish his career with four gold medals and become known as ´´perhaps the greatest and most famous athlete in track and field history´´ (as his obituary in The New York Times put it), but nearly 80 years later, it´s the context that has made his performance so memorable. Owens was one of the greatest track athletes in the country in the 1930s, and while he was at Ohio State, he set three world records and tied another one within 45 minutes at a Big 10 meet in 1935, but hurdles on the track weren´t as hard to clear as ones he had to deal with away from sports. As a young black man, he had to deal with entrenched racism across the country, from staying in segregated hotels to not being eligible for a sports scholarship. In 1936, World War II was still a few years away, but Adolf Hitler was fully in control of Nazi Germany and hoped to use the Olympics as a showcase of the resurgent German nation. Internationally, Hitler´s Germany was not yet a major concern to the vast majority of people unfamiliar with politics, nor were the domestic policies being carried out by the Nazis, but some still thought the United States should not even participate in the Olympics that year. Of course, those who wanted to boycott the games could not have known what Jesse Owens had in store in Berlin. Given the unabashed racism of Hitler´s regime, Jesse Owens´ performance would end up being a rebuke of sorts to Hitler´s notion of Aryan superiority, and an apocryphal legend has since sprung up that Hitler left the games early to avoid having to shake Owens´ hand. While that reputed snub almost certainly did not occur, one Nazi official did note that Hitler ´´was highly annoyed by the series of triumphs by the marvelous colored American runner, Jesse Owens. As I start writing this I am in the midst of curating a show of photographs by Charles March, for the rough warehouse visual arts space I work with in Bermondsey S.E.1. The conjunction of artist and location will strike some people as strange for many reasons. Charles March is best known nowadays as the Earl of March, holder of one of Britain’s great aristocratic titles (he is a direct descendant of Charles II, though the Merry Monarch’s French mistress, Louise de Kéroualle, Duchess of Portsmouth). He is also the gifted entrepreneur who has made his estate at Goodwood in West Sussex famous for both horse-racing and motor sport. What is he doing slumming South of the River?Answers to this question are easier to give than may appear at first sight. Bermondsey is very rapidly becoming London´s new artists´ quarter. The exhibition is, among other things, a celebration of that fact. Directly above our ground floor space at the Bermondsey Project are two floors of studios managed by the Bow Arts Trust. Three streets away is the enormous new gallery created from another and even bigger warehouse by White Cube. There are a number of other galleries and studio complexes in the vicinity. London is now a major centre for the international art world. The only other European city that houses as many studios is not Paris but Berlin. And Berlin does not have nearly as many galleries, public or commercial, which feature the latest developments in contemporary art. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Don Wang. Being a refugee is not a choice. Our choice is to die at home or risk death trying to escape. (Yusra Mardini) Yusra Mardini fled her native Syria to the Turkish coast in 2015 and boarded a dinghy full of refugees bound for Greece. When the small and overcrowded boat´s engine cut out, it began to sink. Yusra, her sister and two others took to the water, pushing the boat for three and a half hours in open water until they eventually landed on Lesbos, saving the lives of the passengers aboard. This is the story of that remarkable woman, whose journey started in a war-torn suburb of Damascus and took her through Europe to Berlin and from there to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Yusra Mardini is an athlete, one of People magazine´s 25 women changing the world, a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador and one of Time magazine´s 30 most influential teens of 2016. 1. Language: English. Armed American soldiers stand in the stone window frames of a ruined building in Berlin, curious and disturbing echoes of those classical statues that so often were used to add portentous significance to a facade; but here in a 1961 photograph by Don McCullin, they are overlooking, with some intensity, the East German military on the other side - the Wall has just been built. Chronicling another painful divide in 1964, McCullin photographed a distraught, silently screaming widow, a Turkish Cypriot victim of that civil war, restrained and held by other women, in an oddly dignified frozen tableau. In a 1968 photograph a US Marine pauses for thought, inadvertently echoing those renaissance paintings of meditating scholars, holding his helmet rather than a book - but this is a quiet moment in the battle for Hue. It is McCullin´s photographs which helped to define the savage war in Vietnam for Britain, and beyond. Some is unbearably sad: a young North Vietnamese soldier, a casualty of Hue, stares sightlessly at the photographer, his hands outstretched to the detritus of his pockets, scattered on the earth beside the body - bullets and photographs of his family, wife, and babies. 1. This is the first study to explore fully the myth of America as reflected in the nation´s popular music. Beginning with the songs of the Pilgrims and continuing through more than two centuries of history and music, Born in the U.S.A. shows the emerging American myth and gives a close reading of the compositions of songwriters as diverse as William Billings, Henry Clay Work, Irving Berlin, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen. So that the full and diverse narrative of this complex nation might be recorded, this insightful study is focused both upon the national myth and upon the songwriters and performers representing subcultures and alternative viewpoints that are the text of America´s story. Through hymnlike paeans and through discordant lamentations protesting the realities of the contemporary workaday world, popular music is an astonishing mirror of American history. The book is published by University Press of Mississippi. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Gary Roelofs. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/084876/bk_acx0_084876_sample.mp3.
